Thermal Water Vapor Emission from Shocked Regions in Orion

چکیده
Using the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) onboard the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), we have observed thermal water vapor emission from a roughly circular field of view approximately 75 arc seconds in diameter centered on the Orion BN-KL region. The Fabry-Perot line strengths, line widths, and spectral line shifts observed in eight transitions between 71 and 125μm show good agreement with models of thermal emission arising from a molecular cloud subjected to a magnetohydrodynamic C-type shock. Both the breadth and the relative strengths of the observed lines argue for emission from a shock rather than from warm quiescent gas in the Orion core. Though one of the eight transitions appears anomalously strong, and may be subject to the effects of radiative pumping, the other seven indicate an H2O/H2 abundance ratio of order 5 × 10, and a corresponding gas-phase oxygen-to-hydrogen abundance

ISO – SWS observations of pure rotational H 2 O absorption lines toward Orion – IRc 2 ⋆
First detections of thermal water vapor absorption lines have been made toward Orion IRc2 using the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Grating spectra covering wavelengths 25–45 µm yield 19 pure rotational lines, originating from energy levels 200–750 K above ground. Fabry-Perot spectra of 5 transitions resolve the line profiles and reveal the H 2...

We have searched for water vapor emission at 183 GHz, redshifted at 157 GHz and 161 GHz, in the two ultraluminous starburst galaxies Mkn 1014 and VIIZw244. Due to the low energy level of the upper state of the 183 GHz transition (≈ 200K), it is expected that the emission regions are extended, as they are in the Orion or W49Nmolecular cloud cores. Since the warm and dense gas, typical of star-fo...
